Field Trip to Lowe’s!

Thursday January 24, 2008- Contact Forrest if you want to go

Unknown Variables

  • Temperature- supposed to take place at a warm temperature but it’s winter.
    • If temperature isn’t hot enough nothing will decompose.
    • Wrap with insulation and black plastic bags reach 50F, will cause decomposition but not rapid. For max potential need about 90F.
    • Can bacteria produce enough heat if heated at first?
  • What we’re testing.
    • Different designs, what you put in it, what gases come from the digester?
    • Another possibility is picking a design and observing the different unknown variables, learn and refine our test criterion and design.
  • Storage Space
    • Talk to Outback about if we can store stuff there before we build the digesters.

Next Step

  • Come up with a good solid design to present to both groups of people.
  • Need to decide who we need to talk to first (Outback people and Health and Safety).
  • We need to have a design to go to Environmental Health and Safety but need to get project approved to have money to make the digester.
  • Get gas collection bag.
  • Forrest will put a drawing together and talk to Nikki as well as talk to the safety people.

Money

  • Submitted review for $600 to AS who return our proposal in a week or two.
  • If not approved, review proposal and submit it again.
  • Also contact previous engineer graduates or talk to Western Foundation.
  • Hannah will talk to Angie to try and get more money.
  • Recruit more people when we have money by making posters, using AS center.

Contact

  • Science technology (Erin)- figure out composition of the gases.
  • Health and Safety- show them a labeled and descriptive design.
  • Outback people (Steve)- about sauna, chicken coup/duck enclosure that isn’t being used.
  • Nikki about setting up bank account to have money by the weekend.

Ideal Timeline

January 28th

Receive money. If we got the money Monday we need to make a cataloged list of what we need (specifics) and submit a purchase order or a paper with approximations of the range of spending. We could also buy supplies with money from Jason.

By Mid February

Have all the supplies for the digester bought and assembled.

By March

Have the digester running.

By the end of March

Create poster for the EWB national organizations.
